THE INTERNET
The History of the Internet
The Internet is the worldwide public computer network for the exchange of information in an electronic format.
Information on the net is stored in servers, which are workstations or simply PCs connected to the Internet. These servers make information available to all Internet users wherever they are and in whatever existing multimedia format the information might be: texts, photographs or animated images and sounds.
Internet was born as far back as 1973, when the standard Internet Protocol (IP) was developed. This standard allowed computers to be connected remotely, whatever platform they used. However, it is true that the early 1990's, in fact, mark the birth of the Internet as we know it today: the web. The web is a set of “pages” encoded in HTML which mixes text, links and images. It can be accessed through a URL address via the HTTP protocol.
First data transmission services in Morocco
In the early 1990s the first data transmission services appeared in the shape of Maghripac and the digital network service, MARNIS.
-
Maghripac is a dedicated network for data transmission using the principle of packet switching which is a switching technique based on data slicing in order to accelerate transfers. It was introduced in 1991, and offers the entire Kingdom of Morocco direct and indirect access. It promotes the decentralization of the economic and administrative activities of operators in both the public and private sectors (while meeting expectations in the computer communications and telematics fields) by offering solutions based on combining applications linking telecommunications and information technology.
-
MARNIS Digital Network Services.MARNIS represents the successful realisation of the digitization of the telephone network and the progressive integration of functions previously provided by specialized networks. It is a network that can offer, simultaneously or individually, services such as the telephone, fax, audio, images and data transmission. In order to do this, you need to use an intermediary, a single connection known as a multi-service connection.
The official launch of the Internet in Morocco
The first Moroccan Internet connection was inaugurated on 15 November 1995, the first services being E-mail, file transfer (FTP), teleworking (through TELNET), and discussion groups (via USENET).
It allowed public access to these network services.
The Internet is a great success in Morocco, thanks to technology ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line), which allows us to offer a high and very high speed Internet services such as digital television via ADSL, 3G and 4G.
